At Mansfield, you may choose to complete your certification program by scheduling appropriate graduate coursework. This same course work may apply to the course requirements of a Master's degree and serve to satisfy requirements for both the advanced degree and the certification program at the same time!
Many certification programs include enough graduate course possibilities to enable you to earn both the certification and degree programs taking graduate courses. Some students elect to finish the certification program first since this enables them to teach and then, after securing employment, return to complete graduate degree requirements. These costs are often reimbursed by the employing school district under terms of their collective bargaining agreement.
**Please note that students who enter existing teacher education programs may complete their degrees and obtain certification under the current rules only if they complete the degree program and apply for certification prior to August, 2013. Please read below for details.
Mansfield University offers the following certification programs:
N-3, N-12, K-6, & K-12 Programs:
- Art Education K-12
- Early Childhood N-3 (requires initial certification in elementary education)
- Elementary Education K-6
- Music Education K-12
- Spanish K-12 - as a foreign language
- Special Education N-12
- Adding Special Education to a completed Elementary Education Certification

Dual Certification in Special Education and Elementary Education K-12
Secondary (7-12) Programs:
- Chemistry
- Social Studies
- Earth & Space Science
- English
- General Sciences (requires initial certification in another area)
- Mathematics
- Physics
Advanced Certification/Graduate Programs:
- Reading Specialist (requires initial certification in another area)
- School Library and Information Technologies (requires initial certification in another area)
**IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING TEACHER CERTIFICATION**
Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has issued program changes to ALL teaching certificates. In compliance, Mansfield University has already begun revising its teacher education curriculum to comply with the state's new regulations. However, new regulations for post-baccalaureate certification programs have not yet been published in final form.
ALL incoming and current candidates in the existing programs must complete all certification requirements by August 31, 2013, including testing and submitting an application to PDE. PDE will issue these certificates to candidates whose complete applications are received by that date.
As of September 1, 2013, PDE will only issue certificates for candidates that have completed the new approved programs: Pre K-4, 4-8, and Special Education (added to existing certification or dual program enrollment only) Pre K-8 and 7-12.
Request Certification Evaluation:
*Please note that this is not an application. If you are interested in applying to one of our certification programs, then you may find our application link located in the Apply Now! section to the right of the screen. Applicants automatically require a certification evaluation.
- Review the course requirements for your certification program of interest by clicking on the subject area (see above)
- Print and complete a Request for Certification Evaluation Form
- Submit the completed request form and official transcripts from all colleges/universities you have attended to: Christina Hale, Certification Evaluator, G-27 South Hall, Mansfield, PA 16933. If you are a Mansfield University Alumnus, then we can obtain your transcript for you upon request.
- Provide a resume if you have significant and extensive work experiences, which may gain you credit for the coursework.
The evaluation process takes approximately 3 - 6 weeks. Please note that the process may take longer if:
- you request more than one program evaluation (please limit your requests to two programs)
- there are high volumes of true applicants requiring certification evaluations
- there are high volumes of current students requiring certification evaluations
Once the work up is complete, you will be sent a completed copy of the certification evaluation identifying required coursework. If you are interested in completing one of our certification programs, then please submit an application and $25 processing fee.
