Non-Degree at the Graduate Level

Non-degree students at Mansfield University take graduate level coursework for several different reasons:

  • Personal or professional enrichment
  • GPA did not meet the minimum requirement for graduate degree program
  • Continuing education credits to meet Act 48 requirements
  • Transferring course credit to another institution

Personal or professional enrichment:

*ALL courses require the approval from the department chairperson and/or the course instructor prior to enrolling in the course.  If you are interested in taking a graduate level course, but not pursuing a graduate degree from MU, then please fill out the non-degree seeking section of our graduate application. GPA deficiency:

If you applied to a graduate degree program and was accepted as a non-degree student, then your academic credentials did not meet the minimum graduate admissions requirements but did meet department approval to enroll in coursework (*not available for all departments). In that case, students must complete nine (9) credits at the graduate level or twelve (12) credits at the undergraduate level in order to be reconsidered for admission into a degree program, **unless otherwise specified in the programs listed below.  After the successful completion (3.0 GPA) of the appropriate coursework, students must reapply to the program.

Students seeking entrance into a M.Ed. or M.S.Ed. program:

In compliance with the Education Department, non-degree graduate students with a GPA deficiency may only enroll in the following (three) courses prior to acceptance into any of the M.Ed. or M.S.Ed. programs:

Three (3) credits of research:

  • ED 5500 - Methods and Materials of Research

Three (3) credits of psychology (choose one):

  • ED 5505 - Educational Psychology
  • SPE 5501 - Psychology of Exceptional Children

Three (3) credits of foundations (choose one):

  • ED 5535 - Foundations of Education
  • ED 5531 - Social Foundations of Education
  • ED 5532 - Historical Foundations of Education
  • ED 5533 - Philosophical Foundations of Education

Please review the course rotation schedule in order to determine when these courses may be offered. After the successful completion (3.0 GPA) of the required coursework, students must reapply to the program. A copy of your clearances must be on file or in processing with the Education Department prior to course registration.  If accepted, please plan to submit passing scores from the Praxis I exam.

Students seeking entrance into the Master of Science in Nursing program:

In compliance with the Health Sciences Department, non-degree graduate students with a GPA deficiency must contact the program director, Dr. Janeen Sheehe for course approval and space availability: jsheehe@mansfield.edu.  After the successful completion (3.0 GPA) of the required coursework, students must reapply to the program.

Students seeking entrance into the School Library & Information Technologies program:

In compliance with the SL&IT Department, non-degree graduate students with a GPA deficiency must contact Dr. Larry Schankman for course approval and space availability: lschankm@mansfield.edu.  After the successful completion (3.0 GPA) of the required coursework, students must reapply to the program.

Act 48 Continuing Education:

Mansfield University of PennsylvaniaIf you are a Pennsylvania educator and wish to report credit undergraduate and graduate courses taken at Mansfield University to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, in compliance with the Act 48 requirement, you may do so through our link to Credit Keeper.

Transfer credit:

If you are planning to transfer course credit, then please be sure that your institution and graduate program will accept coursework from Mansfield University.
